Meet The Two Little Sisters....
Kayla: 18. middle sister. Our artistic one.
Nickname: KK…
She is currently a freshman at The Clark Atlanta University…majoring in psychology.
Best quality(s): Kayla is the sister who will ride with you and for you until the wheels fall off. If you hurt one of her sisters, she is now a problem for you and she doesn’t mind letting you know why. She is so creative and is the queen of DIY’ing clothes and hair.
Kerington: 11. baby sister. Our future “woman in STEM”.
Nickname: Lil Baby, Keri, little girl….
She is currently a 6th grader in magnet school and wants to create apps when she is older.
Best quality(s): Kerington is the sister who boost your confidence and makes you believe you can do anything. She is just the sweetest and funniest little girl.
When I was younger I remember my mom always telling us to love, protect, support, and defend each other. My mom made sure we valued what it meant to have siblings, especially sisters. “I am my sister’s keeper” is an exact description of my sisters and I….
When my parent’s were taken to prison, our sisterhood was all we had to lean on. It was difficult for us to go from a complete family, to one broken apart. To make the transition as easy as it could be, I tapped into everything I was taught and saw from my mama. How to make a house a home, how to nurture and affirm my sisters, teach them the lessons she taught me, and how to be present for every milestone (big or small). One positive aspect about my parent’s imprisonment is how our sisterhood blossomed. Kayla is my mini me in some aspects. She is the definitely the sister that you cannot put in a box. We are those sister’s who sit on Facetime and watch the same show together or just sit on the phone in silence, just so we can feel like we are in the same room. Kerington is our “sweet little baby”, no matter how old she gets. Even though Kerington is eleven, we still cater to her and spoil her rotten; whatever she wants she gets. She’s so smart, cute, and funny you just can’t help but love on her. Kayla and Kerington are literally my world, whatever I do, I always think about them and how my decisions can benefit them and their growth.
Kayla just went off to college a few weeks ago, we thought we were prepared for this transition, but we weren’t prepared enough. Lets just say we cried rivers. This is the first time in seven years that her and Kerington had been apart, ever. For me it was hard to say goodbye, because I realized that my little sister wasn’t so little anymore. I had to let her go so she could fly high, and hope everything I taught her, in my mama’s absence, was useful. It sucked to realize that I couldn’t shield her from the world, anymore. Taking Kayla to college and seeing her and Kerington say goodbye, just reminded me of how much and how strong the love we have for each other. We want each other to be the absolute best and if one of us wins, all of us win. My sister’s are by far my biggest cheerleaders, as I am theirs. I always imagine what great things they’ll do in the future and whose life they’ll influence, like they’ve influenced mine.
I am so grateful to my parents for blessing me with two amazing little sisters. Don’t get me wrong they work my absolute last nerve, sometimes, but I couldn’t imagine doing life without them. They are my inspiration and motivation to be better and do better. They say little sisters are good for your soul; and my soul is full all the time.
